The layout of Skara Brae is very unique, this is because all of the found houses had a similar shape, size and furnishing. This is thought to mean that every one was equal, or some people were at least because the area to the left in the newer houses had some sort of an obstacle, usually a box made of stone slabs this was believed to block off the "women's side". It's thought to be the "women's side" because archaeologist Gordon Childe found beads and paint in the smaller beds, on the "women's side". There was also a seat near the fire which could be the seat for the owner of the household. |
